What Each Grade Does in Solar & New Energy
An application page that lists five grades without saying what each one is for is a catalogue, not a specification. These are the roles they actually play here.
| Grade | The job it does here | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 6063 | Module frames and rail profiles — the standard extrusion alloy for the frame market. | Specs → |
| 6005 | Higher-strength frame profiles, where 6063 does not meet the structural calculation. | On request |
| 6061 | Brackets, clamps and mounting structure that carries load rather than only holding the laminate. | Specs → |

Specification Mistakes That Cost Money Here
None of these is exotic. All of them arrive on real enquiries, and each one adds a round trip before a price can be issued.
1. Specifying the frame alloy without the anodizing class. Outdoor service life is set by the film, not by the alloy number.
2. Ignoring the load case. Frame profiles are designed to a wind and snow load, and the alloy choice follows from that calculation, not the other way round.
3. Treating IEC 61215 as a frame certificate. It is a module-level test; the frame has to be compatible with it, which is a design statement the mill does not issue.
4. Mixing temper across one project. T5 and T6 frames look identical and behave differently under clamp load.

What We Supply Into Solar & New Energy
Verification
What We Put in Writing for This Application
- Mill test certificate to the class your file requires — 2.2 or 3.1 — carrying the actual mechanical test values for the heat.
- Gauge and surface inspection recorded before packing; photos of the sealed container.
- Where the market requires it, the classification society or coating test report with the issuing body named.

Solar & New Energy — Questions That Come Up
Which alloy is used for module frames?
6063-T5 is the standard for module frames and rail profiles. 6005 is used where the structural calculation needs more strength than 6063 provides.
How thick should frame anodizing be for outdoor service?
The class is normally stated on the drawing rather than assumed. Ask for the film thickness and the sealing method in writing, because outdoor service life is set by the film rather than by the alloy.
Are solar frames supplied against a mechanical test?
Normally yes — a tensile or yield requirement on the profile. Put the requirement on the drawing and the mill will test to it and report the values on the certificate.
