Application

Aluminum for Cookware & Deep Drawing

Deep drawing is a ductility test. Purity and O-temper control decide whether the blank draws or tears.

What Each Grade Does in Cookware & Deep Drawing

An application page that lists five grades without saying what each one is for is a catalogue, not a specification. These are the roles they actually play here.

Grade The job it does here Detail
1050 Deep-drawn bodies and lids where maximum ductility matters; the standard drawing grade. Specs →
1060 Slightly purer than 1050, used where the anodic finish has to be bright and uniform. Specs →
1070 The highest-purity option for critical anodizing, where 1060 still shows inclusions. On request
3003 Bases and rims that need more strength than pure aluminium gives, at some cost in drawability. Specs →

Specification Mistakes That Cost Money Here

None of these is exotic. All of them arrive on real enquiries, and each one adds a round trip before a price can be issued.

1. Specifying hardness instead of temper. Cookware drawings often call a hardness range; the H temper is what produces it, and the two have to be consistent.

2. Ignoring earring. Deep-drawn circles ear when the blank is not controlled, and the trim loss is a real cost per thousand pieces.

3. Buying circles without stating the anodizing quality. AQ stock is rolled and handled differently, and it cannot be substituted after the fact.

4. Assuming all 1050 is equivalent. Surface quality and inclusion level vary by mill and by cast, and they show up after anodizing rather than before.

For cookware the useful order line is grade, temper, diameter and its tolerance, hardness range, and whether the blank is for anodizing. That is five items, and most enquiries arrive with two.

What We Put in Writing for This Application

  • Mill test certificate to the class your file requires — 2.2 or 3.1 — carrying the actual mechanical test values for the heat.
  • Gauge and surface inspection recorded before packing; photos of the sealed container.
  • Where the market requires it, the classification society or coating test report with the issuing body named.

Cookware & Deep Drawing — Questions That Come Up

Which grade draws the deepest?

1050-O and 1060-O give the most ductility and are the standard drawing blanks. 3003 draws adequately, but it earns its place through strength in the base rather than through formability.

Why does an anodized pan show streaks?

Usually because of surface quality or inclusions in the blank, not the anodizing line. Anodizing quality stock and a controlled cast are what prevent it, and neither can be added after the blanks are cut.

Can circles be supplied to a diameter tolerance?

Yes — state the diameter and the tolerance band you can accept. Blank tolerance, earring and trim loss are linked, so the band is a cost item as well as a dimensional one.
