1235 Aluminum Alloy
1235 is high-purity aluminum foil stock at 99.35% minimum. The tight control on iron and silicon — Si+Fe capped at 0.65% — keeps the etch uniform and the surface clean, which is why it is the usual grade for capacitor cathode foil, battery current collectors and lamination base.

Chemistry
1235 Chemical Composition Limits
Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 1235.
| Element | Limit (% wt) | Element | Limit (% wt) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Si | 0.25 max | Fe | 0.40 max |
| Si + Fe | 0.65 max | Cu | 0.05 max |
| Mn | 0.05 max | Mg | 0.05 max |
| Zn | 0.10 max | Ti | 0.06 max |
| Other, each | 0.03 max | Other, total | 0.10 max |
| Al | 99.35 min |
Composition limits are the Aluminum Association registered ranges, which is what ASTM B209 and EN 573-3 both refer back to. Mechanical values are typical for the temper shown, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Typical Mechanical Properties by Temper
Room temperature, longitudinal direction. Use these to compare grades and tempers — the acceptance figures for your order come from the product standard and are reported on the mill certificate for the actual heat.
| Temper | Tensile (MPa) | Yield (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Thermal conductivity (W/m·K) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O | 80 | 30 | 22 | 230 |
Other tempers in the 1235 range — O · H14 · H16 · H18 — are available to order. Values for those are quoted with the offer rather than assumed from this table.
Forms
1235 in the Forms We Supply
The same alloy behaves differently as coil, plate and extrusion because the rolling or extrusion route sets the temper and the surface. Pick the form first, then the temper.
Aluminum Foil

Where it is used
Typical End Uses for 1235
Packaging & Foil
Pinhole count, elongation and surface cleanliness are the three numbers that decide whether a foil runs on your line.
Electronics & Heat Management
Heat sinks are an extrusion geometry problem: fin height, fin pitch and flatness tolerance. 6063-T5 holds fine fins that 6061 cannot.
Selection
Choose 1235 When — and When Not To
Choose 1235 when
Foil that has to be drawn, laminated or etched uniformly — capacitor cathode foil, battery current collectors, flexible packaging lamination and cable shielding.
Think again if
Anything needing puncture resistance in thin gauge — that is 8011 territory. 1235 is pure, formable and conductive but not as strong as an iron-bearing foil alloy.
Before you ask
1235 — Questions Buyers Ask
What makes 1235 better than 1060 for foil?
Both are pure-aluminum foil, but 1235 has tighter iron and silicon control (Si+Fe 0.65% max) which improves etching uniformity for capacitors and reduces pinhole sources in thin gauge. 1060 is fine for general wrap; 1235 for critical electrical and lamination work.
Can 1235 be used for battery foil?
Yes, as current-collector foil, usually in H18 at 0.009–0.020 mm. The purity and low impurity content give the stable surface and consistent etch or coating adhesion that battery lines need.
Why does 1235 cost more than 8011?
Purity. 99.35% minimum aluminum with tight impurity caps costs more to make than the iron- and silicon-bearing 8011, and the lower pinhole and impurity requirements mean tighter process control.
