Brass vs Stainless Steel: Machining, Corrosion and Cost

Brass machines easier and looks warmer; stainless corrodes less. The environment decides which one you actually specify.

2026-10-31

If you are choosing between brass and stainless steel for a machined or decorative part and only remember one thing, make it this: brass machines easier and looks warmer; stainless steel corrodes less and is the one you specify when the part has to survive contact with water, chlorides or anything mildly aggressive.

They are not really competitors — they are answers to different questions. Brass is chosen when free-machining and appearance matter; stainless is chosen when corrosion resistance and hygiene matter. Most of the confusion comes from treating them as interchangeable, which they are not once the environment is specified.

The two materials side by side

Property Brass (C360 free-cutting) Stainless 304 Stainless 316L
Machinability (C360 = 100) 100 ~45 ~40
Corrosion in tap water Tarnishes, can dezincify Excellent Excellent
Corrosion in chloride / marine Poor — dezincification Fair Good
Magnetic No Slightly (work-hardened) Slightly (work-hardened)
Typical cost Lower Mid Higher

The machinability number is the one that drives most of the confusion. C360 free-cutting brass is the reference standard for machinability — the brass is alloyed with lead so the chip breaks cleanly and the tool does not clog. Stainless steel work-hardens as you cut it, so it needs slower speeds, sharper tools and more coolant. A shop that quotes brass in minutes will quote the same part in 304 in noticeably more time, and the difference is real, not markup.

Where each one belongs

  • Brass wins on high-volume turned parts — valve bodies, fittings, connectors, decorative hardware — where the leaded alloy's free-machining character cuts cost, and where the environment is dry or only mildly wet.
  • Stainless wins on anything that touches water, food, chemicals or salt. The passive chromium-oxide film on stainless self-heals if scratched; the copper-zinc surface of brass tarnishes and, in the wrong water, can dezincify — the zinc leaches out and leaves a spongy, weak copper skeleton that looks fine until it fails.

The dezincification trap

Dezincification is the brass-specific failure nobody specifies around. In soft or slightly acidic water, the zinc in brass dissolves preferentially, leaving a porous copper structure that keeps its shape and its thread form while losing its strength. A dezincified brass valve can look perfect from the outside and shear off in the hand. The fix is either a dezincification-resistant brass (with arsenic or tin added) or — more commonly — moving the part to stainless steel and ending the argument.

The decision rule that survives contact with the real world: if the part is machined and dry, brass is the economical answer; if the part is wet, washed, chlorinated or load-bearing in service, specify stainless and stop negotiating.

How to specify either without ambiguity

Name the alloy, not the color. "Brass" means nothing by itself — C360 machines, C260 forms, C280 is a forging grade. "Stainless" means even less — 304, 304L, 316L and 430 are different materials with different weld and corrosion behavior. Write the grade, the standard (ASTM B16 for brass bar, ASTM A276 for stainless bar), and the certificate level you need.

Supplying stainless steel, not brass. At Hongming Metal, copper alloys are a reference line we write about, not a range we sell. When corrosion resistance is the deciding factor — which it usually is once water or chlorides enter the picture — the stainless steel bar and rod, tube and pipe, and fittings and flanges ranges are what we actually ship. Start with the stainless steel bar and rod range.
