430 Stainless Steel

430 is a ferritic stainless — chromium-bearing but nickel-free, so it is magnetic and noticeably cheaper than the austenitic 300 series. It resists atmospheric and mild chemical attack well and does not work-harden like 304, which makes it easy to form and draw, at the cost of lower corrosion resistance and no weld ductility.

Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 430.

Composition limits are the ASTM A240 registered ranges, which EN 10088-2 refers back to. Mechanical values are typical for the solution-annealed condition, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Selection

Choose 430 When — and When Not To

Choose 430 when

Appliance trim, kitchenware, automotive trim and architectural cladding where the part is magnetic or where cost matters and the environment is mild. It forms and draws well because it does not work-harden the way 304 does.

Think again if

Welded, load-bearing or chloride-exposed service. Ferritic stainless has limited weld ductility and lower corrosion resistance than 304, so keep it to indoor and atmospheric duty.

Before you ask

430 — Questions Buyers Ask

Is 430 magnetic?

Yes — 430 is ferritic, so it is strongly magnetic. That is often the whole reason it is chosen, for induction cooktops and magnetic fixtures.

Is 430 cheaper than 304?

Yes, because it contains no nickel. The saving is real, and it is the usual reason to pick 430 over 304 for mild-duty parts.

Can 430 be welded?

Only with care — ferritic grades lose ductility and toughness at the weld. For welded work, an austenitic grade like 304 is the safer call.

Does 430 rust?

It resists atmospheric corrosion well but stains sooner than 304 in wet or salty conditions. Use it indoors or in mild outdoor exposure.
