Stainless Steel Standards by Form: A240, A312, A276 Map

The standard follows the form, not the grade. A 304 sheet is A240, a 304 pipe is A312, a 304 bar is A276 — the alloy is the same, the number you write changes with the shape.

If you are ordering stainless steel and only remember one thing about standards, make it this: the standard follows the form, not the grade. A 304 sheet is covered by ASTM A240, a 304 pipe by A312, a 304 bar by A276 — the alloy is the same, but the number you write on the purchase order changes with the shape you are buying. Getting the form wrong on the standard is the single most common reason a stainless order gets quoted back with a question, and it is the easiest one to fix before you send the enquiry.

The form-to-standard map

Form Standard Notes
Sheet & plate (coil) ASTM A240 / EN 10088-2 Flat-rolled, both hot and cold rolled
Seamless & welded pipe ASTM A312 / EN 10217 Pressure and general piping
Tube (heat exchanger) ASTM A213 / A269 Small-bore, tighter tolerance
Bar, rod & shapes ASTM A276 / A479 Round, flat, hex, square
Fittings & flanges ASTM A403 / A182 / ASME B16.9 Elbows, tees, flanges
Wire ASTM A580 Cold-drawn wire

The grade is the same family — 304, 316L, 2205 — but each form has its own governing standard with its own chemistry and mechanical limits. A certificate that says "A240 316L" is for plate; it does not cover a 316L pipe, which should say "A312".

Why the form decides the standard

A standard is written around how the material is made and how it fails. Sheet and plate are rolled flat, so A240 cares about thickness, flatness and surface. Pipe is made by welding or piercing a tube, so A312 cares about wall thickness, weld integrity and pressure rating. Bar is hot-rolled or cold-drawn to a section, so A276 cares about size tolerance and straightness. The chemistry of 316L is roughly the same across all three, but the tests and the acceptance limits are not — which is why the standard name changes with the shape.

The three grades most buyers get wrong

  • 304 vs 304L on a weld. If the part will be welded, order 304L (A240 for sheet, A312 for pipe) to avoid sensitization. The L is low carbon, and it is the L grades that survive welding without a post-weld anneal.
  • 316 vs 316L for chlorides. Both carry molybdenum for chloride resistance; the L is the low-carbon weldable version. A coastal or chemical part should name 316L, not just "316".
  • 2205 duplex for strength. Where you need roughly double the yield strength of 304 with better chloride resistance, 2205 (S32205) is the answer, and it often lets you drop a wall thickness.

How to write it into the order

Name the grade, the form and the standard together. "304 sheet to ASTM A240" is a complete spec; "304" alone is a question. If a drawing names two standards, say which one governs before the order, not after the inspection report. State the environment — salt air, food contact, pressure — and the correct standard and certificate type come back in the same reply.
