310S Stainless Steel
310S is a high-alloy austenitic stainless with 24–26% chromium and 19–22% nickel, built for oxidation resistance in continuous high-temperature service up to about 1100 °C. The low-carbon "S" version resists the carbide precipitation that would embrittle the standard 310 in the heat-affected zone.

Chemistry
310S Chemical Composition Limits
Percent by weight. These are the registered limits, not a typical analysis — a heat that sits anywhere inside them is still 310S.
| Element | Limit (% wt) | Element | Limit (% wt) |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | 0.08 max | Mn | 2.00 max |
| P | 0.045 max | S | 0.030 max |
| Si | 1.50 max | Cr | 24.0 – 26.0 |
| Ni | 19.0 – 22.0 | Mo | — |
| N | — |
Composition limits are the ASTM A240 registered ranges, which EN 10088-2 refers back to. Mechanical values are typical for the solution-annealed condition, not acceptance minima — the minima are set by the product standard, and the mill certificate reports the measured values for your heat.

Selection
Choose 310S When — and When Not To
Choose 310S when
Furnace parts, radiant tubes, heat-treatment fixtures, kiln liners and any part that must hold strength and resist scaling in continuous heat. The high chromium and nickel keep it from oxidizing away where 304 or 316 would scale.
Think again if
Ambient-temperature service — 310S is expensive and its high nickel buys nothing in mild conditions. It is also not a seawater grade, so for chloride duty keep to 316L or a duplex.
Before you ask
310S — Questions Buyers Ask
How hot can 310S run?
Continuously up to about 1100 °C for oxidation resistance. Intermittent service is usually derated — cyclic heating and cooling accelerates oxidation.
Is 310S the same as 310?
Almost — the S version has low carbon (0.08% max) to resist carbide precipitation and embrittlement at the weld and in service.
Is 310S magnetic?
No, it is fully austenitic and non-magnetic.
What does 310S cost compared with 304?
Considerably more, driven by the nickel content. Specify it only when the high-temperature oxidation resistance is actually needed.
