316 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate
316 sheet and plate is the molybdenum-bearing flat form for non-welded marine, chemical and food process parts. It carries the same chloride resistance as 316L — the difference is carbon, which only matters at the weld — so for a non-welded panel, tank wall or trim piece, 316 is the lower-cost order with the same corrosion behavior.

316 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate — What to Watch
For a non-welded panel or tank, 316 is the economical molybdenum-bearing order. If the panel is welded into an assembly, specify 316L so the seams do not sensitize. Name the finish (2B, No.4, 8K) and the thickness: under about 4.76 mm it is sheet, above it is plate.
Choose 316 when
Non-welded marine and coastal parts, chemical handling equipment, food and pharmaceutical process lines, and architectural hardware exposed to salt air. The molybdenum buys the pitting resistance that lets it survive where 304 would rust-stain.
Think again if
Welded assemblies — there specify 316L, because 316's higher carbon can sensitize at the weld. And indoor, dry, low-corrosion work where the molybdenum premium is wasted on 304.

316 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate — Questions Buyers Ask
Should I order 316 or 316L sheet?
For a non-welded part, 316 — the carbon difference only matters at the weld. If the sheet is welded into an assembly, specify 316L so the seams keep their corrosion resistance.
What is 316 sheet used for?
Marine and coastal panels, chemical handling equipment, food process parts, and architectural hardware in salt air — anywhere chlorides are present and the part is not welded.
Does 316 sheet rust near the sea?
Far less than 304, but it is not immune. In severe crevice or stagnant seawater it can still pit — for those, a duplex like 2205 is the honest answer.
