316L Stainless Steel Fittings & Flanges — What to Watch
Specify 316L (not 316) for welded fittings, and match the fitting standard to the pipe: ASTM A403 for wrought fittings, ASTM A182 for forged flanges. State the schedule and the connection (butt-weld, socket-weld or threaded).
Choose 316L when
Coastal facades, marine hardware, chemical and food process lines, pharmaceutical equipment, and any welded assembly in chloride service. The molybdenum raises the pitting resistance enough to survive salt air and chlorinated water that would pit 304.
Think again if
Indoor, dry, non-welded applications where 304 already does the job — the molybdenum premium buys nothing there. And do not use 316L where a duplex like 2205 is needed for stress-corrosion resistance under load.

What is the difference between 316L pipe and 316L fittings?
The product standard, not the alloy. Pipe is ASTM A312; fittings are ASTM A403 (wrought) or ASTM A182 (forged flanges). Match them so the line is one material decision, not a mix.
Are 316L flanges forged or wrought?
Flanges are usually forged to ASTM A182; butt-weld fittings like elbows and tees are wrought to ASTM A403. Name the standard and the schedule on the order.
Why specify 316L fittings instead of 316?
For welded systems the low carbon matters — 316L does not sensitize at the weld. Specify the L grade for anything that will be welded into a line.
