316L Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe
316L tube and pipe is the chloride-service line — marine, chemical, food and pharmaceutical duty where 304 would pit. The molybdenum resists chlorides and the low carbon keeps welds sound, which is why it is the default welded line grade.

316L Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe — What to Watch
Seamless to ASTM A312 for pressure and process duty; welded to ASTM A249 or A269 for sanitary and general service. Specify the L grade for anything welded, and pickling and passivation after welding on process and food lines.
Choose 316L when
Coastal facades, marine hardware, chemical and food process lines, pharmaceutical equipment, and any welded assembly in chloride service. The molybdenum raises the pitting resistance enough to survive salt air and chlorinated water that would pit 304.
Think again if
Indoor, dry, non-welded applications where 304 already does the job — the molybdenum premium buys nothing there. And do not use 316L where a duplex like 2205 is needed for stress-corrosion resistance under load.

Before you ask
316L Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe — Questions Buyers Ask
When does process pipe need 316L instead of 304?
When chlorides are in the fluid — brackish water, brine, seawater, many food and chemical streams. 304 pits in those conditions; 316L adds molybdenum to resist it.
Is 316L pipe seamless or welded?
Both. Seamless to ASTM A312 for pressure duty; welded to ASTM A269 or A249 for general and sanitary service. Pressure and surface finish decide which.
What standard should 316L sanitary tube meet?
ASTM A270 for sanitary tubing, with 3-A or EHEDG where the equipment is certified. Name the standard and the Ra finish on the order.
