2205 Stainless Steel Bar & Rod
2205 duplex bar and rod is the high-strength, chloride-resistant machined form — shafts, fasteners, pump and valve parts for marine and chemical service. Twice the yield of 316L means a smaller diameter carries the same load, and the duplex structure resists the pitting and stress-corrosion cracking that attack austenitic bar in chloride duty.

2205 Stainless Steel Bar & Rod — What to Watch
Cold working duplex raises its strength but also its hardness, which matters for sour-service limits under NACE MR0175. Specify the condition (cold drawn, hot rolled or forged) and the hardness limit where sour service applies.
Choose 2205 when
Chemical tanks, desalination and seawater systems, pressure vessels, and structural applications where the part is both load-bearing and chloride-exposed. The higher yield lets the designer use thinner section than 316L for the same load.
Think again if
Simple indoor or mildly corrosive service where 304 or 316L is cheaper and easier to fabricate. Duplex needs more care in welding and forming, and the premium is only justified when the strength or corrosion combination is actually needed.

Before you ask
2205 Stainless Steel Bar & Rod — Questions Buyers Ask
Is 2205 bar stronger than 316L bar?
Yes — roughly twice the yield strength, so a smaller diameter carries the same load. That is where the duplex premium pays for itself in weight and material saved.
What is 2205 bar used for?
Shafts, fasteners, pump and valve parts, and marine hardware — anywhere the part is both load-bearing and chloride-exposed, where 316L would pit or crack.
Does 2205 bar need special machining?
It machines more slowly than 304 because it is stronger, but it is routine with the right tooling. Specify the condition and the hardness limit where the part is for sour service.
