2205 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate
2205 duplex plate is the load-bearing, chloride-exposed flat form — pressure vessels, chemical tanks and seawater structures where the part is both stressed and corrosive. Twice the yield of 316L lets the design cut wall thickness while the duplex structure resists stress-corrosion cracking.

2205 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate — What to Watch
For a 2205 pressure vessel, the higher strength changes the design — thinner walls are possible, but the code (ASME VIII, EN 13445) applies duplex-specific limits. Welding needs a matching nitrogen-bearing filler and careful heat input; hot forming must be followed by solution annealing and quench.
Choose 2205 when
Chemical tanks, desalination and seawater systems, pressure vessels, and structural applications where the part is both load-bearing and chloride-exposed. The higher yield lets the designer use thinner section than 316L for the same load.
Think again if
Simple indoor or mildly corrosive service where 304 or 316L is cheaper and easier to fabricate. Duplex needs more care in welding and forming, and the premium is only justified when the strength or corrosion combination is actually needed.
Before you ask
2205 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate — Questions Buyers Ask
Why use 2205 plate for a pressure vessel instead of 316L?
Thinner walls and higher corrosion resistance. The doubled yield strength cuts wall thickness and weight, and the duplex structure resists stress-corrosion cracking in chloride service that 316L cannot survive.
Does 2205 plate need special welding?
Yes — a matching nitrogen-bearing filler and controlled heat input to keep the austenite-ferrite balance. A duplex weld done wrong loses the corrosion resistance of the plate it joins.
What is 2205 PREN?
Around 34–35, well above 316L at 24–26. It is the number behind choosing 2205 for seawater and high-chloride duty.
