2205 Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe

2205 duplex pipe is the strong, chloride-resistant line — roughly twice the yield strength of 316L with a higher PREN, so it carries the same pressure in a thinner wall and resists the stress-corrosion cracking that cracks austenitic grades in seawater and chemical service.

2205 Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe — What to Watch

Duplex pipe is ASTM A790, distinct from austenitic A312. Welding must use a nitrogen-bearing filler and controlled heat input to hold the austenite-ferrite balance — the weld is where duplex corrosion resistance is won or lost.

Choose 2205 when

Chemical tanks, desalination and seawater systems, pressure vessels, and structural applications where the part is both load-bearing and chloride-exposed. The higher yield lets the designer use thinner section than 316L for the same load.

Think again if

Simple indoor or mildly corrosive service where 304 or 316L is cheaper and easier to fabricate. Duplex needs more care in welding and forming, and the premium is only justified when the strength or corrosion combination is actually needed.

Before you ask

2205 Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe — Questions Buyers Ask

What standard is 2205 duplex pipe ordered to?

ASTM A790 for duplex pipe, with tube to ASTM A789. It is a different standard from austenitic A312 because the duplex structure has its own inspection and heat-treatment requirements.

Why use 2205 pipe instead of 316L?

Strength and corrosion. 2205 has about twice the yield strength and a higher PREN, so it resists stress-corrosion cracking and chloride pitting that 316L cannot, and it does the same job in a thinner wall.

Can 2205 pipe be welded?

Yes, with a nitrogen-bearing filler and controlled heat input. The weld must hold the austenite-ferrite balance or the joint loses the corrosion resistance the rest of the line has.
