304 bar and rod is the machinable form — shafts, fasteners, pump and valve parts. Cold-drawn bar holds a tighter tolerance and a better finish; hot-rolled bar is cheaper for large diameters where the part is machined anyway.

304 Stainless Steel Bar & Rod — What to Watch
For machining, cold-drawn 304 machines more cleanly than hot-rolled. Specify the diameter tolerance and the condition (cold drawn, ground or hot rolled). If the part is a fastener blank, state the heading or forging route so the cold-work level is right.
Choose 304 when
General corrosion duty, food contact, architectural trim and indoor fittings. The 18/8 chemistry resists atmospheric and mild chemical attack, welds well, and is stocked in far more gauges and forms than any other stainless grade.
Think again if
Coastal or chloride service, and welded assemblies. Chlorides pit 304; welding sensitizes it unless the low-carbon 304L is specified. If the part sees salt air, chlorinated cleaners or a weld, move to 316L or 2205.

Is 304 bar magnetic?
Slightly, when cold-drawn. Cold work induces a small amount of magnetism even in austenitic 304, so a magnet test that sticks to a drawn bar does not mean the grade is wrong.
What is the difference between cold-drawn and hot-rolled 304 bar?
Cold-drawn holds a tighter tolerance and a smoother finish and is slightly harder from the cold work; hot-rolled is cheaper for large diameters. Pick by tolerance and machining, not just price.
Can 304 bar be used for marine fasteners?
Not reliably in salt water. For marine and coastal fasteners, specify 316L or a duplex — 304 will pit and rust-stain in chloride service.
