304 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate
304 sheet and plate is the general-purpose flat form — thin sheet for fabrication and trim, thicker plate for tanks, pressure vessels and structural panels. The sheet/plate split is a thickness question: under about 4.76 mm it is sheet, above it is plate, and the mill route changes with it.

304 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate — What to Watch
For a 304 tank or vessel, the plate is the working material and the weld is the risk. Specify the low-carbon 304L heat for anything welded, and state the finish (2B, No.4 or 8K) and the flatness tolerance if the panel is visible.
Choose 304 when
General corrosion duty, food contact, architectural trim and indoor fittings. The 18/8 chemistry resists atmospheric and mild chemical attack, welds well, and is stocked in far more gauges and forms than any other stainless grade.
Think again if
Coastal or chloride service, and welded assemblies. Chlorides pit 304; welding sensitizes it unless the low-carbon 304L is specified. If the part sees salt air, chlorinated cleaners or a weld, move to 316L or 2205.

Before you ask
304 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate — Questions Buyers Ask
What is the difference between 304 sheet and plate?
Thickness. Under about 4.76 mm it is rolled as sheet; above that it is plate, usually hot-rolled and finished differently. The application usually decides which you need before the grade does.
What finishes does 304 sheet come in?
2B, BA, No.4, hairline and 8K mirror for cold-rolled sheet, plus No.1 for hot-rolled plate. Name the finish and the Ra if the surface is critical.
Can 304 plate be used for a pressure vessel?
Yes, and it is the standard vessel grade for non-chloride service. Specify 304L for the welded seams and confirm the design code (ASME VIII, EN 13445) so the certificate matches the design.
